Inside a pin tumbler cylinder
Nearly every residential key in Navarre operates a pin tumbler cylinder, and once you see the shape of it the rest of the trade stops being mysterious. The cylinder has a fixed outer housing and, inside it, a rotating core called the plug. The plug is what turns when the key turns; the housing is what stays still. If the plug could rotate freely, any key would open the door, so something has to stop it. That something is a row of small stacked pins.
Each pin position is a drilled chamber running from the housing down into the plug. In each chamber sits a spring, then an upper pin (the driver), then a lower pin (the key pin). At rest the spring pushes both pins down so the driver straddles the boundary between plug and housing. Metal crossing that boundary is what jams the plug in place. That boundary has a name: the shear line. The whole job of a key is to lift every stack so the joint between driver and key pin sits exactly at the shear line, at every position simultaneously. When all of them line up, nothing crosses the boundary any more, and the plug rotates.
That is why a key has a jagged edge. Each cut depth corresponds to one pin position, and the depth is chosen to lift that particular stack precisely to the shear line. Cuts are not freehand; they come from a defined set of depths spaced far enough apart that a machine can hit them repeatably. The sequence of depths across the blade is the bitting, and the bitting is the actual secret. The blade profile — the wavy grooves running lengthwise down the key — is separate. Those grooves are the keyway, and their job is only to decide which keys will physically enter which cylinders. A key with the wrong keyway will not go in at all, even if the bitting would have been correct.
Two practical conclusions fall out of this. First, a lock is not a single secret but a chain of five or six small ones, and every one of them has to be right. Second, everything that matters is measured in fractions of a millimetre, which is why the trade cares so much about wear.
What a rekey actually changes
Rekeying is the most commonly bought and least commonly understood service on this list. Here is the physical event. The locksmith removes the cylinder, takes the plug out of the housing, and lifts out the existing key pins. The springs and drivers usually stay. He then fits a different set of key pins, chosen so that a different bitting — your new key — brings every stack to the shear line. Plug goes back in the housing, cylinder goes back in the door. From the outside nothing has changed. The knob is the same knob, the finish matches the other doors, the strike is untouched. From the inside, every key cut to the old bitting is now dead.
So a rekey does not make a lock stronger. It does not upgrade the grade, improve the bolt, or fix a sagging door. It changes who has access, and only that. When a Navarre homeowner asks whether to rekey or replace, the honest test is: are you unhappy with who holds keys, or are you unhappy with the lock? If a contractor, an ex-tenant, a former partner or an unknown number of previous owners' friends may hold a copy, rekeying answers it completely and cheaply, because you are buying new pins rather than new hardware. If the knob is loose, the finish is pitted through, the bolt does not throw fully, or the lock is a grade that never belonged on an exterior door, then no amount of pin work fixes that and the hardware itself has to go.
A second thing rekeying gives you is keying alike. If your front door, back slider deadbolt and garage entry door all take different keys, they can usually be repinned to a single bitting as long as the keyways are compatible. That is not a security downgrade; it is one key instead of four on a ring, which in practice means the spare gets stored somewhere sensible instead of under a pot.
Why a worn key destroys the cylinder that feeds it
This is the failure nobody sees coming, and it is worth understanding because it is entirely preventable. Every time you insert a key, the key pins ride up and over the cuts. Brass is soft. Over thousands of cycles the key's cut depths shallow out microscopically and its edges round over. The key still works, because there is tolerance built into the system. Then it works a bit less well, so you jiggle it. Then you learn to lift the door slightly, or pull it toward you, or turn the key just past the point where it feels right. At that stage most people conclude the lock is going bad.
Usually the lock is fine and the key is the casualty. And here is the part that costs money: a worn key wears the cylinder in turn, because it presents the pins with the wrong lift and drags them across the shear line at an angle rather than lifting them cleanly. Left long enough, you end up with a rounded key operating a cylinder that has been reshaped to tolerate a rounded key, and neither will accept a fresh correct copy.
That is also why copying a worn key is a bad idea. The copier traces the key you hand it, so it faithfully reproduces nine years of wear, and now you have two bad keys. Deadbolt grades, and the number that actually matters
Deadbolts are graded by standardised testing rather than by marketing adjectives, and the grade tells you how the lock behaved under repeated cycling and under applied force. Grade 1 is the commercial-duty tier, Grade 2 sits in the middle and is what a decent residential exterior door deserves, and Grade 3 is the basic residential tier that is common on builder-grade hardware. The difference is real but it is smaller than people assume, because the deadbolt is almost never the thing that fails.
What fails is everything around it. The bolt has a throw — the distance it projects out of the door edge when fully extended. A bolt that throws a full inch into a properly prepared frame is a different object from a bolt that throws half an inch into a strike plate held by two three-quarter-inch screws in soft trim. Under a kick, the failure is not the bolt shearing; it is the strike plate tearing out of the jamb, or the jamb itself splitting. That means the cheapest meaningful security upgrade in most Navarre houses is not a better deadbolt, it is longer screws through the strike and hinges into the structural framing behind the trim, plus a strike plate with a box rather than a flat lip.
Second issue: bolt engagement. If the door has dropped, or the frame has moved with humidity, the bolt may only be entering the strike partway, or you may be turning the thumbturn and getting resistance you have learned to force past. A bolt that is not fully home is doing a fraction of its job while looking exactly like a bolt that is. Test it honestly — with the door closed, throw the bolt and feel for whether it runs the whole way without argument.
Transponder keys, mechanical keys, and why fobs cost what they cost

The first device is mechanical. There is a blade, cut to a bitting, that operates the door and often an ignition or a glovebox. Older blades are edge cut — the familiar jagged profile on the outside edges. Most newer ones are laser cut, sometimes called sidewinder or internal cut, where a milled channel runs along the flat face of the blade. Laser blades are cut on a different machine to tighter tolerances, and they are thicker and harder to duplicate casually.
The second device is electronic. Inside the head sits a transponder — a small chip that answers a challenge from a coil around the ignition or from the vehicle's receiver. If the answer is not one the car has been told to accept, the engine management refuses to allow the vehicle to start, even though the mechanical half worked perfectly and the key turned. This is the immobiliser, and it is the reason a key can turn while nothing happens. A remote head key adds lock, unlock and alarm buttons to that same head. A proximity fob goes further: there is no blade in use at all during normal driving, and the vehicle detects the fob's presence and authorises a push-button start, with a hidden emergency blade tucked inside for a dead battery.
